How to fix path to latex commands in Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, latex commands are no longer on my path. Following this thread...

If you can already run latex from the command line, you don't have this problem.

Create a softlink /usr/texbin/ if necessary (I think the Mavericks install deletes this):

sudo ln -s /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX/Contents/Programs/texbin /usr/texbin

Add /usr/texbin/ to your path, e.g. in .bashrc:

export PATH="/usr/texbin:$PATH"

In El Capitan (or perhaps earlier), /usr/texbin/ is no longer writeable even with sudo, so use /usr/local/texbin/ instead.
